In 2018-October Juniper announced that the new JNCIE-SEC JPR-933 beta exam will be available in December and January. Ok, this might not be super recent news, it was announced last October – I am just a bit behind on posting stuff due to studying for my JNCIE-SEC.

Juniper has finally released the dates for 4th annual partner and customer Juniper NXTWORK conference – and the event has grown so much that we now get to go to a new location! This year the event is October 9th – 11th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV. Can you believe it, we are going to VEGAS BABY! The Mandalay Bay has hosted many very notable technical conferences over the years, and now they get to add Juniper Nxtwork to that list. Juniper NXTWORK 2017

In just over two months it will be time for the Juniper customer summit known as NXTWORK 2017. This is an awesome chance to meet with other Juniper customers, Juniper employees, our awesome peers, and if you are lucky some of the amazing Juniper Ambassadors (pictured below). The event is scheduled for December 11 – 13 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, San Francisco, Ca. This event is similar to what other vendors offer for a conference (Cisco, VMWare, Dell/EMC) yet much more intimate. There are breakout sessions available that you can attend to learn more about technologies, services, education, and much much more. You can be assured that you will have a good seat for any of the speakers, no stadiums here where you feel disconnected – here you will be up close and personal with all the different speakers.

Yes!!! I passed the Juniper JNCIE lab last year!! It was actually back in May 2016 that I_ _earned my JNCIE-ENT #567 and I wanted to finally take a moment and blog about my experiences, study approach, as well as my overall impression of the certification track. Let me answer the first question that you may have, what took me so long to blog about my experience as most people who accomplish this shout to the world. Well, that is fairly simple in case you have not noticed my blogging in 2016 started to wane, if not almost disappear. That was primarily due to two things, studying for the JNCIE and work got really really busy. About 50% of every month last year was spent on the road. I had a customer that was doing a big Data Center move and it just kept me overly busy. Much of that has now calmed down and finally allowed me to get this long overdue post out.

Juniper Certifications now good for 3 years!

It is finally official, Juniper has extended their certification expiration from two years to three years. Originally Juniper certifications where active for 2 years, and then you had 1 year after that to renew. If you did not re-certify prior to the 2–year anniversary, you went into an inactive status for a year with your certification. Then if you did not renew within that two years, your certification became expired and you would have to take the test(s) again to regain that certification. What Juniper has now done is give you three years of active status, and you need to re-certify prior to the 3^rd year anniversary – there is no more inactive status. While this does alleviate much pressure on candidates (it can be hard to re-certify every certification every two years), it also means that the motivation factor of “inactive” status is gone. I just logged into my CertManager portal page to check on my certifications as I know I had one that was in inactive status. It is now active, but now shows _Expiring._ At least that tells you that you need to re certify soon! Luckily they do also list the date of the Expiration on the page, so you know your drop-dead deadline. Coming this November, Juniper has finally jumped into the Customer Summit bandwagon. This is something that has been asked for for many years now, a way for Juniper customers and advocates to get together and talk Juniper. This event will allow you to connect with your peers in the industry, meet current and potential new customers, and connect with Juniper leadership. Some of the primary topics of the inaugural event this year is:

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)
Software-Defined Networking (SDN)
Cloud-Enabled Enterprise
Secure Networking
Data Center Virtualization

I recently purchased a Juniper J2320 from eBay for a fair price. I know it is an older router, but it has the features I need in order to test and write a few things. When I received the router it was not sent with a wiped config, so I was unable to log into it upon booting. Since I need to recover the device, figured might as well write and share how to do it! Obviously the first thing you will need will be a Serial connection to the device. I am assuming you have a USB -> Serial adapter, if not this is the one I have and I got it from Amazon here LINK. 1. Make sure the power to the device is turned off. If it is turned on, please use the power button to force the system to shut down cleanly. If you do not do this and just yank the power, you risk corrupting the OS and having more fun later.

A Junos workbook in the works…

You may have noticed on my twitter feed that I have been interacting with some Junos pros over the past few months, they have been helping me with a small guide that I am working on. Below is information on that guide:

I am currently working on a “workbook” I have subtitled “A Junos Guide by an IOS Guy” and I am intending to publish it throughout October and November as individual posts. Once all the individual posts are published, the guide will be available in PDF format as a single download. This is the same process I am doing with IOS XR – all the IOS XR posts will be available as a single PDF download – just like I did for the Nexus 7000
It is my intention for this “workbook” to help those of us who know Cisco IOS to learn and understand Juniper Junos. I will admit that I was initially intimidated by the look of the Junos configuration, but as time has gone on I have learned to understand it and actually like it. As they say, the more you work with something, the more comfortable you feel with it.
