Meet the new ISR Series – ISR 4000 running IOS-XE

In June of 2013 Cisco released the newest member of the ISR family, the ISR4451-X router (Cisco – blog post). At that time it was the only model in the ISR44xx line, but today it now has some new siblings. Today, October 2, 2014, Cisco has introduced some companious, namely the ISR 4321, 4331, 4351, and 4431. The below graphic from Cisco that shows the new line and the performance characteristcs of each. You will note, for example, that the ISR4321 says 50–100 Mbps. The base version of the device will support 50 Mbps, but to move to 100 Mbps on that box you just need a software license. This will allow a network to grow with it needs without having to replace hardware, you will just have to add a license file. Back in the ISR G1/G2 days we need to sometime replace hardwre in order to gain additional performance, but that is not the case with the ISR 4000 series. Much of that comes thanks to Cisco using IOS-XE on these devices. A quick blurb IOS-XE from the previous link is :

My hosting provider, Digital Ocean, has added IPv6 to one of their NY Data centers. Over this weekend, and thanks to Shellshock BASH vulnerability, I finally got around to migrating the server to a new host that is IPv6 enabled.

So as of this morning, there is a now a AAAA record for www.fryguy.net!

I recently purchased a Juniper J2320 from eBay for a fair price. I know it is an older router, but it has the features I need in order to test and write a few things. When I received the router it was not sent with a wiped config, so I was unable to log into it upon booting. Since I need to recover the device, figured might as well write and share how to do it! Obviously the first thing you will need will be a Serial connection to the device. I am assuming you have a USB -> Serial adapter, if not this is the one I have and I got it from Amazon here LINK. 1. Make sure the power to the device is turned off. If it is turned on, please use the power button to force the system to shut down cleanly. If you do not do this and just yank the power, you risk corrupting the OS and having more fun later.

Cisco Exam Policy Changes and Cost Increases

Certifications

There has been some talk on the twitter-verse and at Cisco Live around some of the changes that Cisco is making to the CCIE/DE written and lab policies. Last month they posted those changes to their Certification Exam Policies website to let everyone know and read. The ones that are key to CCIE/DE candidates (and some will be effective August 2, 2014) are:
Written:

Candidates who fail the CCIE/DE written must want 15 calendar days, beginning the day after the fail, before retaking the exam
Once passed, you cannot retake the same written exam within 180 days
Candidates may attempt the CCIE/DE written exam up to four (4) times per rolling calendar year.

Lab (here is the big one):

Candidate must wait 30 days between CCIE lab attempts (30 days starts the day after the failed attempt)
For your 1^st attempt there is no wait time.
For your 2^nd attempt, there is a 30 day wait time
For your 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th attempt, there is a 90 wait time between each
For your 6^th , 7^th and onward, the there is a 180 day wait time between each.

I have been meaning to write a post about my upcoming NANOG 61 trip, just have not had the time to. Between Cisco Live, Kindergarten graduation, pool installation planning, and life – time was focused on other things. So, here is the post!
I have been a member of the NANOG mailing list for a few years now, and if you are into networking you really should be as well. There is alot of great conversations there around network technologies, outages, contact information, as well as many other things. NANOG 61 is being held in Bellevue, WA at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue from June 2 to the 4th, 2014. The company I work for, Dimension Data, was nice enough to invite me to attend with some of my co-workers – and how do you say no to being invited to an awesome event!

Cisco Live 2014, San Francisco, CA is a wrap. In case you did not know, this was the 25^th Anniversary of Networkers / Cisco Live! I have taken some time and documented the CAE Hats over the past 25 years and you can see them here – . That post will be updated as the years go on to include the latest hats and information. I just wanted to recap parts of the event and share them with you.

Overall Event

Overall the event was wonderful and surely success by any measure. I had a great time, met great friends (both old and new), and learned a lot in the sessions I attended. The sessions were great, albeit a bit too packed for my taste. You see, Cisco Live had about 25,000 people in attendance this year and I feel that that the Moscone is getting too small for this event. Being spread out across 4 or 5 buildings (Moscone North, South, West, and Yerba Forum, and a few hotels) for sessions was a bit much and confusing at times. The food (breakfast / lunch) at the event was sub-par this year, more on the terms of efficiency than anything. While I did appreciate the speed of the box-style lunches, I felt that they lacked options and healthier choices. I will admit that the lunch lines moved very well compared to other years. When it came to the food at World of Solutions (WoS), I will admit I did not partake in that – I usually headed over to Mel’s Diner for dinner (and breakfast). Just something about Mel’s that is hard to beat for good food, convenience, and cost.

Cisco Live 2014 – Final Countdown!

Ok, that video probably dates me a bit, and that is OK. This will be my 9^th consecutive time attending Cisco Live (aka Networkers). Just a few final things to share before the event kicks off.
The other day I received an e-mail from Cisco Live with a special announcement. It reads:
This is a special announcement for all Cisco Live lab and technical seminar attendees and speakers.
Sunday morning please expect traffic delays in San Francisco due to the annual Bay to Breakers race. Howard Street outside of the Moscone Center will be closed from 3rd Street to 9th Street from 6am – 11am and you will not be albe to cross Howard Street between Moscone Center North and Moscone Center South during this time. If you are commuting into the city on Sunday, we highly recommend using public transportation. If you are staying at a hotel on our shuttle bus route bus service will continue as scheduled, but buses will be dropping off on Mission Street where we will have staff to direct you to Moscone North.
Please allow for extra time at registration and getting to your scheduled session.
